AgroParisTech Students in Bonn: Committed Climate Observers
June 07 2023From June 5 to 15, four students from AgroParisTech will attend the Bonn Climate Change Conference in Germany to take part in climate negotiations as accredited observers. Samuel, Estibaliz, Loïck and Raphaël will represent the institution and share their experiences with the rest of the world. This conference will set the stage for the next Conference of the Parties (COP), and is of crucial importance to the development of global climate policies.
The Bonn Climate Change Conference: A Key Preparatory Meeting
Every year, the World Conference Center in Bonn hosts the Bonn Climate Change Conference (also called the “Bonn Intersessional”, organized by the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Bonn Climate Change Conference involves two key bodies, the SBSTA (Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice) and the SBI (Subsidiary Body for Implementation). These bodies meet to prepare for the next COP and discuss the texts that will be adopted at this global conference. Although preliminary negotiations receive less media coverage than the COP itself, they play a crucial role in the fight against climate change.
The Role of Observers
The AgroParisTech students obtained accreditation as observers, giving them the privilege of attending all the activities at the conference. In addition to attending the conferences, discussions, and negotiations, they will also have the opportunity to speak with the negotiators outside the formal sessions. These young observers will also be able to organize events and participate in lobbying to ensure that progress is made on climate issues. Their main mission as observers is to keep the AgroParisTech community informed and to raise public awareness of the importance of these global negotiations.
Committed Students
Each of the four students has expertise in a specific area and will focus on particular topics during the Bonn Climate Change Conference.
- Samuel, a first-year student in the engineering program at AgroParisTech, will be present during the first week and will concentrate on subjects related to agriculture, water, and forestry.
- Estibaliz, a physiologist working toward a Specialized Master’s Degree in public and strategic environmental policy, will also attend the first week of the conference. She specializes in the areas of biodiversity, adaptation, loss, and damage.
- Loïck, a second-year apprentice student at AgroParisTech, will travel to Bonn for the second week and will focus on agricultural issues.
- Raphaël, in the final year of a Master’s Degree in Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution, will also attend the second week of the conference. His field of expertise is global assessment, which covers the review and assessment of contributions determined at a national level within the framework of the Paris Agreement.
The participation of AgroParisTech students in the Bonn Climate Change Conference is testament to their devotion to the fight against climate change. As accredited observers, they will have the opportunity to attend negotiations from a uniquely close vantage point, interact with global decision-makers, and share their knowledge with the general public. Follow them on social media and keep yourself informed of developments in these climate talks, which are crucial for the future of our planet.
