Our students are at COP 27!
November 22 2022For the second year running, AgroParisTech students have attended the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as observers. This edition, following on from COP 26 in Scotland, is currently taking place in Egypt until November 18, 2022. It aims to renew solidarity between countries in order to bring the historic Paris Agreement into effect.
This new edition has once again provided the opportunity for AgroParisTech students (nine in total, including students on engineering, master’s and Ph.D. programs, and even one on a sabbatical!) to take part in the conferences and round tables scheduled throughout the event, bringing together heads of State and decision-makers from the spheres of politics, science and civil society. Each day has been dedicated to a specific theme (Agriculture Day, Finance Day, Science Day, Water Day, Energy Day, etc.), culminating in “Solutions” Day on the final day of the conference. As each student has a specific area of interest (see their accounts below), they have split up to go to different event spaces according to the schedule, with the aim of attending a maximum number of conferences and round tables.
Like last year, their objectives were simple: to understand how the negotiations work and to broaden their knowledge of climate issues such as adaptation, loss and damage, finance, agriculture, mitigation, etc.
Meetings and conferences for a better understanding of the issues
To further their understanding, the students were able to meet people from all backgrounds: financial and scientific negotiators, in order to better understand their roles; public figures like Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF, and Barbara Pompili, French Minister of Ecological Transition from 2020 to 2022; and scientific experts like Jean Jouzel, paleoclimatologist and winner of the CNRS gold medal.
Several events also enriched their reflections over the course of the ten days, such as a round table on mitigation with four discussion groups, the aim of which was to progress from “What” to “How”, and the negotiations that took place over several days on how to finance the greenhouse gas emissions reports that countries must produce under the Paris Agreements.
This is an opportunity for the students to get close to the heart of the issues, but also to take on the role of ambassador and teacher, with a debriefing of the various events via social media (Instagram: @lesagroalacop), as well as mediation for a wider audience on subjects linked to COP (e.g. a brief explanation of the most historically significant COPs, the role of finance in climate negotiations, etc.).
The benefits for these ambassadors are twofold: personal enrichment, with career opportunities and a unique experience, as well as a collective role towards the AgroParisTech community through actions to raise awareness, share knowledge and bring people together.
What were the students expecting from this COP?
Clément, studying at AgroParisTech for a Master’s in “Forests and their Environments” (themes explored at the conference: finance and adaptation)
“Taking part in COP 27 will give me a better grasp of the public policies that can and will influence the actions of economic players. I hope to be able to identify pragmatic and effective solutions that will change how we work and our habits as consumers.”
Auriane, from the Nancy Campus, specializing in forests and currently on a sabbatical (themes explored at the conference: agriculture, loss and damage, and gender).
“I wanted to attend COP 27 to broaden my understanding of international climate negotiations. I hope to be able to forge an opinion about the relevance of COP and see what needs to be improved to obtain real commitment by all countries.”
Juliette, an eco-engineer at Toulouse INP, with a master’s degree from AgroParisTech AETPF (theme explored at the conference: agriculture)
“As well as understanding and sharing how the climate crisis is perceived at an international level, I also wanted to take advantage of this major summit to meet young people making small differences and discover local strategies outside of Europe.”
Justine, an AgroParisTech Engineer (class 194), with a bachelor’s degree and master’s in ecology (themes explored at the conference: global assessment, mitigation, and adaptation)
“As I am interested in questions related to ecology, social ecology and politics, I feel it is vital to share what is happening at an international level with as many people as possible, so that everyone can take action in their own way.”
Lorraine, 3A AgroParisTech (class 193), Master’s in Global Health from Sciences Po Paris (theme explored at the conference: finance).
“I am convinced that solutions lie in cooperation between the different players: governments, companies, and citizens. Isolated initiatives are often praiseworthy but rarely effective, which is why I am taking advantage of this COP to look more closely at what our politicians are saying.”
Romain, 3A AgroParisTech (class 195), an apprentice in CSR (themes explored at the conference: global assessment, loss and damage)
“I want to understand the role of COP in how countries are taking responsibility for and taking action against climate change. I also hope to talk to citizens from different countries and gain a better understanding of how they perceive things.”
Angélique, studying at AgroParisTech for a Master’s in “The Environment and Energy Economy” (theme explored at the conference: finance)
“I want to discover the world of international negotiations, which play a key role in the context of climate change. I also hope to discuss with young people and researchers from all over the world, to obtain a more global view of the issues linked to climate change!”
Martin, studying at Polytechnique, with a master’s degree from AgroParisTech CLUES, in the 3rd year of a Ph.D. at the Climate and Environmental Science Laboratory (themes explored at the conference: agriculture and forests)
“I wanted to go to COP to gain a better understanding of how the problem of climate change is being addressed at the level of international negotiations. I would like to understand how civil society can have a decisive impact in these negotiations.”
Sydney, studying at AgroParisTech for a Master’s in “Forests and their Environments”, with an initial background in environmental anthropology (theme explored at the conference: finance).
“The increasing role of forests in international climate negotiations, the relations between developed countries (historical polluters) and developing countries, as well as dialog with other young people from all around the world are subjects I am particularly interested in. I have been following them from France.”
