Montpellier, a testing ground for sustainable water management
May 14 2025Under the auspices of the UNESCO ICIREWARD Center and as part of a partnership between AgroParisTech and the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, the Montpellier campus will welcome a group of 30 students from IHE Delft accompanied by five professors from the MSc Program in Water and Sustainable Development from April 28 to May 16.
A stay dedicated to learning about water management
Dedicated to training and research in water and aquatic environment management, the Montpellier campus will welcome 30 students training to tackle water-related challenges. The first week was devoted to the theme of “Socio Natures.” Students attended classes in the morning and took part in field trips along the Lez River in the afternoon.
Learn on the ground
This study trip is also an opportunity for the group to take part in a case study on integrated water management in the Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole area, focusing on water management in the south of France in the context of climate change. The students will spend two weeks working on various topics:
- Water and urban development: the link between urban growth in Montpellier and water management (challenges, impacts, future scenarios)
- Water and extreme events: evolution, impacts, and management of floods and droughts
- Water and agriculture: efficiency from the laboratory to the field: adaptation strategies and irrigation practices in the context of drought
- Water-energy-food nexus: interconnections between resources, socio-economic and political dynamics
- Rights of nature and rivers: legal approach and awareness-raising, with a focus on the Lez
